Dan Lebowitz Delivers 2017 Commencement Address

May 19, 2017 – On Sunday May 14, Dan Lebowitz, Executive Director of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society at Northeastern University, delivered the 2017 Commencement Address.

In his speech, Lebowitz outlined problems that the country and the world face, such as violence, sexism and racism, and concluded, “We can fix it.”

He said, “We sit here today with a chance to end racism. A chance to end persecution. A chance to end violence. A chance to move forward in the world where we start to understand that if we think about the ‘me’ first and the ‘us’ second we go nowhere.”

Lebowitz’s speech evoked many rounds of applause from the audience. He encouraged everyone to work together to make a positive change in the world: “Every single person on the planet has to believe that the only way we move forward is collectively.”

Lebowitz expressed the need for people to address their self-bias and privilege. By understanding oneself and understanding others, the graduates can change normative culture. “I want people to think about compassion before control,” said Lebowitz. “I want people to think about empathy before evil. I want people to think about kindness before killing. I want people to think about what it feels like to have institutional disenfranchisement kill your family over generations. I want people to think about what their responsibility is moving forward.”

Lebowitz even referenced Kendrick Lamar, encouraging the graduates to “be humble” because true leadership comes from empowerment, not superiority.

Change only occurs when people stand up to make a difference. “I’m going to tell you to put your phone down and solve some problems,” said Lebowitz. “I’m going to tell you that we should not complain about problems. We should be brave enough to get next to them, figure out how to solve them, and love our neighbor in doing so.”

Lebowtiz concluded his speech with, “The promise is ahead of you… At the end of the day I ask you to do better, be better, act better than we did. Do the thing. Get it done. So proud of you.”

Newbury is grateful to have had Lebowitz as the 2017 Commencement Speaker and congratulates him on receiving an Honorary Doctor of Human Letters from the College.
