Nighthawks Volleyball Team Finishes 2007 Season as the Association of DIII Independents Northeast Regional Tournament Champions

The Newbury College Nighthawks women's volleyball team might have seemed like a team that was rebuilding after graduating five key seniors in the 2006 season and only carrying a roster of 8 players. However, the Nighthawks seemed to overcome all odds and proved that they were still a championship team as they finished off the 2007 season by winning the Association of DIII Independents Northeast Regional Women's Volleyball Tournament for the second consecutive year.

Three Newbury volleyball players were recognized as part of the All-Tournament team during the championship. Michelle Mountjoy (Falmouth, MA/East Falmouth), Sandra Karalekas (East Longmeadow, MA/East Longmeadow), and Emily Mullin (Ashland, MA/Norfolk Agricultural) were each singled out for their individual performances in the tournament. However, they were also key players for the Nighthawks all season long. Mountjoy was second on the team in digs this season with 498 and third on the team in kills with 147 while being named MVP of the AD3I tournament. Leading the team on offense was Karalekas with 295 kills. Karalekas also contributed 50 service aces and 369 digs. Playing middle blocker for the Nighthawks was Mullin, who led the team in blocks with 87, and was second on the team in kills, with 220.

Newbury's setter, Sarah Nelson (Bernardston, MA/Pioneer Valley), ran the Nighthawk offense with 6.34 assists per game, and ended the season with 716 assists. Senior captain Courtney LeDoux (Nashua, NH/Nashua) was also a major contributor to the success of this team in the 2007 season. LeDoux, who acted as the team's Libero all season, lead the team in digs, finishing the season with 507, and was also second on the team in service aces with 51. LeDoux will be missed next season not only for her volleyball abilities but also for her leadership qualities, which make her irreplaceable.

The Nighthawks finished their season at 12-22 and once again are the defending Association of DIII Independents champions. Starting in the Fall of 2008 the Nighthawks will start a new history as they will start conference play in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC).
