Athletics - Men's Volleyball

Nighthawks have Outstanding Year; Win ECACs for Second Straight Year

The Newbury College Men's Volleyball team had an amazing 2008 season. The Nighthawks won the NECVA New England Divisional Championship title for the first time in school history, going 10-1 in conference play. They were also recognized by the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association by being awarded with the NECVA All-Academic Team Award for the 2008 season, the third year in a row that the Nighthawks have been honored with this award. And finally, the Nighthawks finished the 2008 season by winning their second straight ECAC North Championship and being ranked 6th in the DIII NCAA, the highest ranking they have ever held as a program.

As if that's not enough, the Nighthawks competed in more matches than any other men's volleyball team in the nation this season. In addition to their full schedule of matches in New England, Newbury traveled to Wisconsin for their spring break and played 6 matches against Midwest competition, splitting for the week at 3-3. The Nighthawks then returned home to secure the NECVA New England Championship title by beating Rivier College 3-1, and entered the NECVA Championship Tournament as the 6th seed, making it to the finals before being defeated by #1 ranked Vassar College.

After the NECVA Championships, Newbury was selected for the second consecutive year to host the ECAC North Championship on their home court. This was the Nighthawks' fourth successive appearance in the finals of the ECACs, and second straight Championship victory, having won their first Championship in the 2007 season. In the semi-finals, the Nighthawks took on the Mavericks of Medaille College and swept them in three sets; 30-26, 30-16, 30-22. The finals saw the Nighthawks play the Endicott College Gulls and dominate the final three games of the match, winning the Championship, 3-1.

Several Nighthawks were recognized this season for their individual accomplishments on the court. Seventh year head coach David Hildebrandt was acknowledged as the 2008 NECVA New England Coach of the Year, after leading the Nighthawks to their best record in the program's history, at 33-10. Senior outside hitter Erik Kostanski (Hampden, MA) and freshman setter Matthew Talamantes (Sylmar, CA) were both chosen to the NECVA All-New England first team, while junior outside hitter Bryan McDermand (Palatine, IL) and sophomore middle hitter Mark Thomas (Wilbraham, MA) were selected to the second team. Kostanski, McDermand, Thomas, and LeRoy Cooper (Claremont, CA) were all chosen as NECVA New England Players of the Week at least once this season while Talamantes was chosen as NECVA New England Rookie of the Week twice, and NECVA All-Conference Rookie of the Week once. Freshman libero Michael Biuso (South Setauket, NY) was also selected as NECVA New England Rookie of the Week once this season.

McDermand, Kostanski, Jay Neveu (Riverside, RI), Matthew Hartman (Feeding Hills, MA), Tim MacMillan (Haverhill, MA), and Matthew Sadowski (Feeding Hills, MA) were all members of the men's volleyball team that demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence and were selected to the NECVA All-Academic team, by maintaining at least a 3.50 GPA in order to qualify. Neveu, Joshua Aberly (Palatine, IL), James Beck (Havre de Grace, MD), and Max Daley (Cranston, RI) were all major contributors to the Nighthawks offense this season while MacMillan, Hartman, Sadowski, Anthony Aponte (Haverhill, MA) and Zac Falconer (Ludlow, MA) completed the Nighthawks defense.

The Newbury College men's volleyball team has accomplished so much because they make success a priority on the court and in the classroom. They have begun a tradition of excellence for the Nighthawks from which the program will continue to achieve success for years to come. Men's and Women's Volleyball Coach David Hildebrandt, a Wisconsin native, joined the Newbury College Athletics staff in July 2001. His impact to both volleyball programs is without question. He has won a combined 242 games during 7 years on the Nighthawks' bench. This is more than any coach at the college for any sport.

The success of the women's program was immediate under Coach Hildebrandt. He has posted winning records in 5 of 7 seasons while setting the school record for wins in a season 5 times. The team won a school record 23 matches during the 2006 season. The team won the NCAA Division III Northeast Independent Championships in 2006 and 2007. He was named Coach of the Year during 2006 for the entire Association of Division 3 Independents. He has coached two players that led the NCAA in a national statistical category, while five players have been named to the Association of Division III Independents All-Conference team. Hildebrandt won his 100th career Women's Volleyball match during the Independent Championship match on November 5, 2006 against University of Maine - Presque Isle.

Coach Hildebrandt, also a member of the Newbury College Admission staff, took a men's program from last place to winning the NECVA New England Title in 2008. The team won a school record 33 matches in the 2008 season while finishing with their highest national ranking of #6. Before he started coaching, the Men's Volleyball team had never won a match, and now he has had winning records the last 5 years. He has coached two All-Americans, 11 NECVA All-Conference Players, 16 NECVA All-Academic Team members, and three National Player of the Week honorees. During the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons, the entire team was named a NECVA Academic team by having a combined GPA of over 3.0. The 2007 and 2008 teams won the ECAC North Men's Volleyball championship. He won his 100th career Men's Volleyball match on January 22, 2008 against Johnson & Wales University (RI).

Coach Hildebrandt is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and the New England Women's Volleyball Association. He is on the AVCA Head Coaches Committee for Women's Volleyball and is an AVCA poll voter for both Men's & Women's Volleyball. Hildebrandt is on the ECAC Men's Volleyball Championship Committee. He has coached both teams to Bard College Tournament Championships and the men's team to the New Jersey City Gothic Knight championship. He was named the Coach of the Year at Newbury College for the 2003-2004, 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 academic years. He also has coached 6 Newbury College Scholar Athlete of the Year Award Recipients.

Before he came to Newbury, he was an Assistant Boy's and Girl's Volleyball Coach at LaSalle Academy, a private Catholic high school, in Providence, Rhode Island during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. The girl's team won the Class B State championship, while the boy's team lost in the finals.

Coach Hildebrandt graduated from Johnson & Wales University with an A.S. in Culinary Arts and a B.A. in Food Service Management (with a concentration in Sociology) in 2001. As a captain of the Johnson & Wales Men's Volleyball team, the team won a GNAC and NECVA New England Division Championship. The team was ranked as high as #11 in the AVCA Coaches Poll during his time at JWU. Hildebrandt was president of the Junior Class and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee for two years while at JWU. Hildebrandt currently resides in Dorchester, MA.

Assistant Coach

Bob Benson joined the Newbury Athletic Department in August 2004 as the assistant coach for the Men's & Women's Volleyball teams. A Maine native, Coach Benson has been playing volleyball for over 25 years. He began with club play in Maine and also played for Augustana College's (SD) club team. Upon graduation from Augustana, he continued playing volleyball. Coach Benson is also a certified high school and college official when he is not playing or coaching. His coaching experience includes coaching adult volleyball players and basketball at various levels.

Coach Benson is very involved in every facet of the coaching staff. He is instrumental in working with the offense and serving. His knowledge for the game has brought the Nighthawks to a new level of success. "Coach Bob brings a ton to the table and is key piece to our success. The teams wouldn't have had the success we have had without him," says Head Coach David Hildebrandt.

Outside his coaching responsibilities, Coach Benson sells real estate in the Greater Boston area with Pathway Homes Real Estate Group. Coach Benson is also a practicing attorney focusing in labor and employment law.
