Men’s Soccer 2007 Preview

The men’s soccer team at Newbury College has a lot to look forward to this year after coming off a 6-12-1 season in 2006 and a trip to the Division III Independent Tournament. Under the direction of first year head coach Jim Odierna, the Nighthawks are preparing for success this fall.

The Nighthawks graduated only one senior from the successful program last year and are looking to Junior John Mawson (Amherst, MA /Amherst) and Senior Chad D’Ancona (Wantage, NJ/ High Point) to lead off the offense this season. In the 2006 season, Mawson led the team in points (35) and was chosen as a member of the Association of Division III Independents Men's Soccer Northeast Regional All Tournament team. D’Ancona is not only an offensive threat on the field but provides superior leadership on and off the field for the Nighthawks.

The defensive end of the field will be guarded by senior goalkeeper Brian Picanco (Lowell, MA/Lowell) and senior defender Evan Hudson (Sunapee, NH/ Sunapee). Picanco completed last year with 103 saves on the season, a save percentage of 73%. Hudson, who was also chosen as a member of the Association of Division III Independents Men’s Soccer Northeast Regional All Tournament team in 2006, not only led the defense but also contributed to the offense with 4 assists and a total of 10 points on the season.

The Nighthawks will also be looking to build on the strengths of the returning players with the 11 new additions to the men’s soccer team.
