FALCONS DROP NIGHTHAWKS

Fitchburg, Mass. – Fitchburg State College pounded out 20 hits and earned 10 walks in a 19-6 triumph over visiting Newbury College Friday afternoon in non-conference baseball action at Fitchburg State.

Behind Neil Gendron’s 2-for-4, four-RBI effort, the Falcons improved to 10-19 overall while the Nighthawks fell to 3-23 overall despite Evan Hudson, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

FSC plated five runs in the third inning and put up crooked numbers in the final five frames to earn the win. In the third, Jim Abreau (3-for-4, 2 RBI) singled home a pair of runs to kick-start the inning, while Ricky Graham (3-for-3, 2 RBI) delivered a two-run single and Gendron had an RBI single to right field.

The Falcons increased their to 8-0 on an Andrew Sauer solo home run leading off the fourth, Curt Heher’s bases-loaded walk and a Gendron RBI sacrifice fly.

The lead swelled to 10-0 after John Phelan hit an RBI double to right and Sauer, who walked, came around to score on a wild pitch.

Newbury cut the deficit to 10-2 in the sixth on a Hudson two-run triple to centerfield, but FSC got those runs and one more right back in the bottom of the frame when Gendron came through with a two-run single to left and Matt Morrison had a bases loaded walk.

The visitors plated three runs in the eighth to make it a 13-5 game, powered by Hudson’s RBI double, Brian Fish’s RBI on a fielder’s choice and Ryan Dorgan’s single up the middle. Fitchburg answered back in the eighth with four runs on a two-run error and Erik DiMauro two-run double.

Newbury got a sacrifice fly RBI in the ninth by David Carroll for the 19-6 final.

Brian Lawlor worked the first six innings on the mound to get the victory, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks while Nick Ryan (4 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 3 K) pitched the final three frames.

Nicholas Dunn was saddled with the loss, pitching the first five innings, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits to go along with seven walks. Jamison Torres came on in relief, allowing seven runs (5 earned) on nine hits with a strikeout and three walks.

ANNA MARIA 16, NEWBURY 12

In a game full of runs and RBIs Anna Maria College beat Newbury College today by 4 runs in a game where the bats were working for both teams. Kyle Green (Worcester, MA) improved his record to 1-0 receiving the win while David Carroll (North Providence, RI) fell to 0-5 after the loss.

The game looked promising for Newbury after they jumped to an early 4-0 lead by way of a two out grand slam by Justin Adams (East Providence, RI), but that was his only hit of the game. Evan Hudson (Sunapee, NH) led his team with 3 hits and 2 runs scored while also driving in a run of his own.

It seemed as though everybody pitched in for Anna Maria as everyone who played the whole game got at least 1 hit and at least scored a run. But the two leaders of the team were Jeff Lander (Gloucester, MA) and James McNamara (Worcester, MA). Lander led his team in RBIs while getting 3 hits and scoring 3 runs while McNamara led in hits, getting 4 and driving in 2 while scoring 2 as well.

Anna Maria also got a strong 2 inning performance from Dan Lugo (Worcester, MA) who came out of the bullpen when it seemed as though Newbury was fighting back. He gave up no runs and only allowed 1 hit while striking out 3.

Anna Maria betters its record to 11-20 and play Nichols on the 23rd while Newbury falls to 3-17 and will play New England College on the 24th.

Nighthawks Sweep Buccaneers

The Nighthawks of Newbury College swept the Buccaneers of Mass Maritime Academy in a doubleheader this afternoon in Chestnut Hill, MA with the scores of 10-0, 7-6.

In game one on the afternoon, the Nighthawks offense dished out 10 runs led by first year catcher Catherine Cullen (Beverly, MA/Beverly), who was 2 for 2 and scored a pair of runs of her own. Following her lead was Adrienne Miller (Prospect, CT/Woodlawn Regional), who picked up her 15th hit on the season while driving in 2 runs. On the defensive side, pitcher Michaela Lynch (Attleboro, MA/Attleboro) was impressive throwing a 2 hitter, striking out 3 and walking 0.

In game two the Buccaneers' bats woke up early guiding them to a 1 run lead in the first, but the Nighthawks responded right back scoring 4 in the second to take the lead. The Buccaneers would not go quietly as they would score 4 more runs to take the lead 6-5 going into the sixth, led by Myra Shannon (Newburgh, ME) and Cali Longtin (Feeding Hills) who each had 2 hits. The Nighthawks stayed together and in the bottom of the sixth scored 2, with Cullen driving in the go ahead run. Miller would take control in the top of the 7th to finish out the game and pick up her 6th win on the season, striking out 10 and only walking 1.

The Nighthawks take to the diamond tomorrow April 19th for a doubleheader against Southern Vermont College, when they will honor their 3 Seniors Lynch, Jessica Lightfoot (Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional) and Alise Jacquet (Holliston, MA/Holliston) in their final home games of the season, first pitch is at 12pm.

Nighthawks baseball 2008The Newbury College baseball team won their first NCAA game in the history of the program today as they defeated the Bears of St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn, NY. The Nighthawks came back from a deficit in game one of today’s doubleheader to take the victory from the Bears, 10-9. In game two, Newbury’s Justin Adams (East Providence, RI/East Providence) was 1 out away from a no hitter, giving up only one run in seven innings. The Nighthawks defeated St. Joe’s 10-1 in game two.

The Bears led in the first game of today’s doubleheader. However, timely hits by Evan Hudson (Sunapee, NH/Sunapee), Brian Fish (East Brookfield, MA/David Prouty), and Adams (each with two hits) helped Newbury come back to tie the game 9-9 in the sixth inning. Billy Maddock (Marshfield, MA/Marshfield) tripled and scored on Dave Carroll’s (North Providence, RI/North Providence) sac fly in the 8th, giving Newbury the win. Maddock also earned the win, throwing three shutout innings, giving up only 1 hit.

For the Bears, Emil Kolenovik (Manhattan, NY/Manhattan) had 3 RBIs and one run and Jacob Tobin (Manhattan, NY/Dwight) had two RBIs and two runs to lead for St. Joe’s in game one.

Nick Dunn (Portland, ME/Deering) led Newbury in game two with 2 hits, 2 RBIs, 2 runs, and 3 stolen bases, while also producing great defense for the Nighthawks. Maddock and Tomas Matthews (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) each pitched in 3 RBIs in game 2, with Matthews also scoring two runs.

Newbury’s second year head coach Greg Sullivan says “I’m proud of these guys, they have come a long way! We played well today but it’s not going to be the highlight of our season and we’re going to continue to build on it.”

The Nighthawks are 2-15 this season, and play again on Tuesday, April 15th, at Emerson College, at 8:30 p.m.
