Nighthawks Lay the Foundation for Future Success
The Newbury College women’s basketball team has a lot to
look forward to in their upcoming seasons, after laying
out the groundwork this year for their bright future. The
Nighthawks went 3-22, which may sound like an unsuccessful
season. However, with a dedicated head coach Katherine Greene
(1st year) and a young team that was led by freshman
captain and standout guard Catherine Cullen (Beverly,
MA/Beverly), Newbury has a strong foundation for potential
in the upcoming seasons.
The highlights of the Nighthawks' season were their non-conference
wins over Anna Maria College, Bay Path College, and Albertus
Magnus College. The Nighthawks' first win of the season
came at Anna Maria with a 63-54 win, followed by Bay Path
whom they beat by eleven, 61-50.
The Albertus Magnus game may have been the most hard fought
win for the Nighthawks this season though, as the team had
to battle back from a 14 point deficit in the second half
to steal the victory from the Falcons, 72-69. This win also
came on the Nighthawks' home court, with all of the players
making significant contributions in the game, making the
triumph that much sweeter.
Playing in all 25 of the Nighthawks games this season were
Cullen and junior guard Katelyn Mark (Quincy, MA/North
Quincy). Cullen accumulated an impressive 313 points,
179 rebounds, 54 assists, and 47 steals in her first season
as a Nighthawk. Mark was also an integral part of the Nighthawks
success this year, collecting 207 points, 156 rebounds,
52 assists, and 50 steals.
The Nighthawks' only graduating senior, Jessica Lightfoot
(Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional) finished up the season
with 228 points, 45 three-pointers, and 79 rebounds and
ended her two year career at Newbury College with 147 rebounds,
99 three-pointers, and 467 points.
Other returning Nighthawks who made a significant contribution
this year are sophomore Rashawna Wynn (Baltimore, MD/Southwestern)
and first year students Tiyauna Walden (Stafford, VA/Brooke
Point), Amy Chen (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford)
and Ashley Monteiro (Cambridge/Cambridge Rindge and Latin).
Wynn contributed 188 points and 144 boards this season,
and also chipped in 32 steals and 19 assists. Monteiro added
a spark behind the 3-point line, connecting on 40 from behind
the arc. She finished her first year with 42 rebounds and
172 points. Walden and Chen were defensive specialists for
the Nighthawks, often applying defensive pressure on opposing
teams’ biggest offensive threats. Even so, Walden finished
the year with 64 boards, 63 points, 28 assists, and 26 steals,
while Chen had an additional 35 rebounds, 18 points and
12 steals.
The Nighthawks are looking forward to the 2008-2009 season
when they will leave the Association of DIII Independents
and become charter members of the NECC conference, and continue
to build a successful program.
