Tips for International Students
Classroom learning differs from country to country, as
it does from classroom to classroom and teacher to teacher.
United States classes are often less formal than in other
countries. But rules and expectations exist. Some guidelines
for classroom learning follow:
- Be on time and early, if possible.
- Sit in or near the front and center for ease in listening, seeing and asking questions.
- Avoid distractions. For example, do not write and pass
notes to friends!
- Listen actively! During lectures, take careful notes
of main ideas. Dont be afraid to ask questions if
you don't understand.
- Use a tape recorder to record your classes.
- Turn in all your assignments on time.
- Respect others opinions.
- Throughout the semester, review your notes and textbooks.
- Prepare for tests and quizzes.
- Join in class discussion.
Remember, you are never alone! Study groups are
a great way to meet new friends and review class material.
Dont be afraid to form one yourself and study with
other people!
In class, it is very important to participate in discussion
by offering and listening to opinions. Most likely, part
of your grade will be based on class participation.
You will also enjoy the class and learn more if you contribute.
You will receive one grade per semester for each class.
The grade is typically based on assignments, tests and quizzes,
class participation and often mid-term and final exams.
Study time needed will depend on how many classes
you take and your major. If English is not your first language,
you will need to spend more time studying. Be reasonable.
If you stay up all night cramming for an economics mid-term,
you may be tired and have trouble remembering information
during the test.
Ask for help when you dont understand something.
If an instructor uses a word you dont understand during
a lecture, ask him or her to write the word on the board.
Dont use a dictionary to look up words too often in
class. You will miss part of the discussion.
See teachers and tutors for help outside
class.
