Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- I have a documented learning disability.
What do I do?
-
- A specific learning disability may affect you in different
courses in different ways. You should forward your Individual
Education Plan and Voluntary Statement of Learning Need
to Sara d Anjou, Associate Dean For Academic Services
((617) 730-7059). Make an appointment with her to discuss
the services you may find helpful. You should also speak
to your professors about your learning disability and
possible accommodations.
-
- Where can I go for help with my classes?
-
- The Center for Academic Services in West Hall room WH102
provides a supportive environment. You can receive walk-in
or scheduled tutoring with center staff and peer tutors.
You can get written information about study strategies,
use computers to write papers, and study at tables. Furthermore,
organized study groups often meet in the Center. Check
with your instructors about existing groups, or form one
yourself with your classmates!
-
- Reminder: Always seek help from your instructors,
too. This shows your motivation to succeed. They will
be glad to assist you!
-
-
- Whom can I talk to about personal
issues?
-
- Professional and caring counselors are available in
the Counseling and Health Education Office in the Student
Center. You are encouraged to meet with them to discuss
health and adjustment issues. Outside referrals with a
local hospital can be arranged as well. Workshops on individual
and relationship issues are given throughout the academic
year. The Director of Counseling and Health Education
can be reached at (617) 730-7157.
-
- What is the classroom attendance policy?
-
- Attendance policies vary, and are outlined in each class
course syllabus. However, if an instructor believes that
your lack of attendance is hindering your performance
and the class environment, you could be Withdrawn
Administratively (WA).
-
- What GPA (Grade Point Average) do
I need to be in good academic standing?
-
- At the end of each semester, your academic record should
meet the minimum grade requirements of the College. The
following chart outlines this policy:
-

| 1 - 18 |

If your grade point average does not fall into one of
these categories, you are academically "safe."
Having at least a 2.0 grade point average at all times
ensures this.
- Remember: You must have at least a 2.0 to graduate.
-
- How do I drop or add a class?
-
- You should ask your professor or advisor for a Drop/Add
Form, which must be signed by your advisor. If your
professor does not have one, go to the Registrars
Office in the Academic Center, fill one out and have the
professor/advisor sign it as well.
-
- Important: To "Drop" a class, you have
two weeks from the beginning of the semester. To "Add"
a class, you have one week from the start of the semester.
-
- What is the difference
between a W and WA?
-
- A "W" means that you initiated the withdrawal
from the class. You can do this within the first eight
weeks of class. A "WA" means that the instructor
has initiated an Administrative Withdrawal, which
can only be done prior to the eleventh week. A reason
for a "WA" could be lack of attendance.
-
- Important: Receiving a "W" or a "WA"
does not affect your grade point average. But if the course
is a requirement, you must retake it.
- I received an "I" (Incomplete) on my transcript. What
should I do?
-
- An "I" means you did not complete the
necessary course components in the required time. You
may request an "I" from your instructor prior
to the final grading period. The instructor decides whether
an extension is appropriate. If the Incomplete is
granted, both student and teacher must agree on how the
make-up work is to be completed.
-
- Important: When you receive an "I",
you have SIX WEEKS to complete the missed work. If you
fail to do this, it will become an "IF" (Incomplete
Fail) which will be computed into your grade point average.
