Academics - School of Business & Management - Majors

Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration

The Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration prepares students to pursue professional careers in business organizations, to own or manage small businesses, or to enroll in a graduate degree program. In the first two years of the program, students complete core courses that introduce them to marketing, management, accounting, international business and finance. Core courses provide business students with the foundation and breadth of knowledge to enter the business world. All students in the Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration must complete the 37 credit core curriculum in order to graduate.

In the last two years, students continue to develop their professional skills with courses that are specific to their chosen concentrations and provide them the depth of knowledge to succeed in their chosen field of business.

Concentration in Accounting

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting prepares students for positions in all facets of the accounting profession. Students graduating from the program will be able to construct financial statements, prepare financial plans, and provide management with the information necessary to make external and internal decisions. The program places strong emphasis on the clear and concise communication of financial information.

Concentration in Business Management

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Business Management prepares students for graduate programs or for positions that require a broad knowledge of management. The curriculum includes introductory courses in core areas, as well as more advanced courses in areas of particular interest, such as organizational theory, human resources management, small business management, or international business management. Internships provide experience in a professional workplace.

Concentration in Fashion Merchandising

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Fashion Merchandising is designed to prepare the graduate to enter middle to upper level management positions in fashion merchandising and related fields. The program helps the student to acquire skills that increase his or her marketability after graduation. It allows the student to develop knowledge and abilities in the areas of international business, marketing, promotions, fashion merchandising and visual merchandising. In addition, interpersonal and management skills are enhanced through team projects and events planning. General Education courses and electives provide breadth to the student's general knowledge, critical thinking and analytical skills. The goal of this program is to prepare the graduate to enter the workplace with the ability to evaluate and synthesize information, and to make managerial decisions in fashion merchandising and related industries.

Concentration in Finance

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance prepares students for positions as analysts in company finance departments, or in the financial services, banking or insurance industries. The curriculum includes introductory courses in core areas, as well as more advanced courses in areas of particular interest, such as cost accounting, portfolio management, international business management, or corporate financial policy. Concentration in Information Technology Management

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Information Technology Management provides students with a foundation in business and IT fundamentals (database technology, networking, and systems analysis and design). Technology courses are complemented with coursework in project management, business and accounting principles, and general education. A capstone course in the senior year gives students the opportunity to develop solutions to real-world business information technology problems and understand how technologies can be used to support the goals of an organization. The Information Technology Management concentration prepares graduates for leadership positions in the field of information management.

Concentration in International Business Management

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in International Business Management prepares students for positions in firms operating in today's global business environment. It prepares both U.S. and non-U.S. students for positions in their home country or overseas. Students develop skills in working in and leading multi-cultural teams and learn the theory and practice of marketing, finance, and management that are essential to working in a global business. Classes and assignments are designed to make effective use of the international and cultural diversity found at Newbury College and in the greater Boston area.

Concentration in Sports Management

The Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Sports Management prepares students for leadership positions in sports-related businesses and organizations. The program applies the fundamental theories and principles of business and management to the sports industry. Courses include sports marketing, facility and event planning, sports finance, media relations, and sports psychology. An internship in the senior year allows students to apply classrooom learning in a sports-related work experience.
