ME101 Medical Terminology (3 credits)
Medical Terminology is a one-semester course designed to
provide students with a basic knowledge of medical language
which will enable them to participate successfully in the
health care field. Students will be introduced to the prefixes,
suffixes and word roots commonly used in the field of medicine.
Emphasis is placed on the correct spelling, pronunciation,
definition, and usage of medical terms.
ME105 Patient Care Skills I (3 credits)
This course is designed to provide the student with the
skills necessary to assist the physician with the examination
and care of patients in health care settings. Students will
become proficient in taking vital signs, preparing patients
for physical exams (including certain specialty exams) and
performing electrocardiograms. The importance of professionalism
and infection control is stressed. Students will become
certified in CPR and first aid. Laboratory sessions are
included. PR: ME101.
ME106 Patient Care Skills II (3 credits)
This course is a continuation of ME105. Students will learn
how to assist the physician with minor surgical procedures,
bandage wounds, and change dressings. Additional procedures
include allergy testing, physical therapy, x-ray preparation,
and irrigation of the eye and ear. Pharmacology and drug
administration will be taught as well as the health maintenance
issues of nutrition, exercise, birth control and breast
examination. Laboratory sessions are included. PR: ME105.
ME107 Medical Office Management I (3 credits)
Today’s medical office is most often managed through a
computer-based system. This course will simulate typical
medical office administrative tasks via the computer. Topics
include appointment scheduling, patient's records, insurance
and billing practices and procedures as well as banking,
payroll and collection procedures and the use of appropriate
telephone techniques for the medical office. PR: ME101 &

ME108 Medical Office Management II (3 credits)
This course is a continuation of ME107. Students will study
further the responsibilities of being employed in and managing
todays medical office. Topics include office communication,
office maintenance, and management of proper policy regarding
drugs and prescriptions. Additionally, students will learn
to transcribe medical records, reports, manuscripts and
other appropriate documents through the use of tape recordings
and Dictaphone equipment. Accuracy of transcription is stressed.
Students will also create a resume and cover letter while
studying the process of seeking employment. PR:ME107.
ME207 Medical Laboratory Procedures I (4 credits)
This course is designed to provide the student with the
skills necessary to conduct a variety of common laboratory
tests. Special emphasis is placed on the safe collection
and handling of specimens, as well as on the importance
of accuracy in conducting those procedures. Students will
become proficient in the use of the microscope, perform
complete urinalyses, and carry out a number of different
immunological studies. Laboratory sessions are included.

ME208 Medical Laboratory Procedures II (4 credits)
This course is a continuation of ME207. Course work includes
hematology, blood banking, coagulation studies, and common
blood chemistries. Students will become proficient in collecting
blood specimens through venipuncture. Additionally, students
will become familiar with basic microbiology and will acquire
skill in performing Gram stains and sensitivity testing.
Other topics include sexually transmitted diseases, infertility,
and prenatal testing. Recognition of normal values is stressed.
Laboratory sessions are included. PR: ME207.
ME215 Medical Law and Ethics (3 credits)
This course is designed to provide the student with an
understanding of ethical issues and the law with regard
to the practice of medicine. Topics include professional
liability, standard of care, informed consent, medical records,
and Health Insurance Patient Protection Act (HIPPA) regulations
and privacy acts. Further discussions will include ethical
issues such as genetic
engineering, abortion, AIDS, infertility options, stem cell
research, and euthanasia. PR: Sophomore status.
ME299 Medical Assistant Internship (4 credits)
The internship experience is an opportunity for the medical
assistant student to put into practice his/her administrative
and clinical skills in a health care facility. A minimum
of 160 hours must be completed under the supervision of
the physician or other appropriate personnel. Students are
required to keep journals of their experiences and to complete
other appropriate projects as assigned by Newbury faculty.
