The Newbury College Honors Program offers qualified students
a multidisciplinary, academically challenging, and intellectually
stimulating supplement to their studies. The goal of the
Newbury College Honors Program is to offer academically
gifted and highly motivated students the chance to express
and expand their intellectual creativity and to develop
their academic potential through group and individualized
programs of study. The Honors Program is open to academically
qualified fulltime students by invitation either at the
time of their enrollment at the College or after they have
completed one year at the College.
During their first year, the honors students will enroll
in Honors Symposium I and II. These courses are a forum
for students to explore and analyze topics in disciplines
they are not studying and offer extracurricular cultural
and social learning experiences. In their sophomore year,
the honors students will enroll in an introductory research
course. They will use the knowledge gained in this course
to complete a sophomore honors thesis in a general education
course. As juniors, the honors students will complete a
research seminar course and begin to explore topics for
their senior honors thesis. During their fourth year, the
honors students will enroll in the Senior Honors Thesis
course. This course will give the students the opportunity
to do extensive research and writing in their major field
of study. The senior honors theses will be presented during
the spring semester. Faculty members will serve in concert
with the Director of the Honors Program as guides and mentors.
In order to be recognized as a graduate of the Honors Program
at commencement, the student must have successfully completed
all the required course work, a sophomore honors thesis,
and a senior honors thesis. They must have no course grade
lower than a B and have achieved a minimum grade point average
of 3.2.
