The courses listed below are intended for students in the
Newbury College Honors Program.
HO101 Honors Symposium I (1 credit)
In this course, students will explore and analyze topics
outside the standard college curriculum. Students will attend
a number of on-campus and off-campus academic, cultural,
and artistic events, and will read related material, write
reaction papers, and meet to discuss the ideas presented.
The theme of the course changes each academic year. Grading
is Pass/Fail.
HO102 Honors Symposium II (3 credits)
This course is a continuation of the theme presented in
HO101. It aims to cultivate critical thinking skills and
encourage individual inquiry by shifting the focus of responsibility
from the teacher to the student. Students will explore and
analyze topics in disciplines that they are not otherwise
studying in order to develop broader cultural, social, and
political awareness. Challenging reading and directed discussions
are an integral part of this course, as are frequent guest
lecturers and field trips. PR: HO101.
HO201 Introduction to Research (1 credit)
This course is designed to introduce students to the principles
and practices of information literacy. To be good researchers,
students need to learn about the research process, which
involves identifying and refining a research topic, developing
a research strategy, finding and critically evaluating information
resources, and using an appropriate citation style to produce
an accurate and consistent bibliography. Ultimately, these
skills will prepare students for conducting effective undergraduate
research and provide the fundamentals for life-long learning.
PR: sophomore status.
HO301 Research Seminar (1 credit)
This course builds on the skills and techniques of research
studied in HO201 Introduction to Research. This course focuses
on teaching the conventions of the research process that
apply in the student's major course of study. Students will
begin to explore ideas that can be developed into their
senior honors thesis. In this course, students will use
and develop critical and analytic skills to create a senior
honors thesis proposal that includes an annotated bibliography.
PR: junior status.
HO401 Senior Honors Thesis (3 credits)
This course allows students to do extensive independent
research and writing in their major field of study. This
experience helps them appreciate the nature and value of
research, the tools and techniques available to them, and
the ways in which information and analysis can be expressed
in written form. PR: senior status.
