Robie, Rios Receive National Honors

Newbury softball pitcher and first baseman Joanna Robie (Andover, Mass.) as well as Samantha Rios (Bronx, N.Y.) were recipients of the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar-Athlete award this month. Excelling not just on the diamond but also in the classroom, they were two of 4,339 student-athletes representing 707 academic institutions across the country to be selected for the honor.

The NFCA presents the award every fall to any player, submitted by a member coach, who achieved a 3.50 grade point average – on a scale of 4.0 – or higher during the 2010-11 academic year. It is the second component of the Association’s academic award program with the first being the 2011 NFCA Top Ten All-Academic team.

On the diamond, Robie appeared and started 31 of Newbury’s 34 contests, leading the Nighthawks with a .430 batting average and a .591 slugging percentage while driving home 26 base runners. In addition to maintaining a 3.50-plus GPA, Rios was also solid on the field, carrying a .270 average with a .343 on-base percentage.
