The goal of all internships at Newbury College is to provide the student with an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to career-related work experience. The internship is an integral part of the College’s academic program. Through their internship, students will gain practical experience and facilitate their development as professionals.
The Newbury College Internship Program was developed so that students will have the opportunity to:
- Explore and clarify major and career goals with professional guidance
- Develop knowledge and skills related to career goals
- Integrate classroom theory with real-world experience
- Take responsibility for individual learning and create a more rewarding college experience
- Establish a network of professional contacts, mentors, and references
- Gain the practical experience that employers look for when hiring college graduates
The Internship Experience
At Newbury, an internship is required for all Bachelor degrees and some Associate degrees. To be eligible for internship placement a student must have maintained a GPA of at least 2.0 and have the program specific count of credits earned.
The required hours for an internship placement vary by school/program. During their placement a student may log between 150 and 300 hours of experience depending on their individual program requirements. All internships span one semester and may be completed in the fall, spring or summer.
In most instances Bachelor’s students will be required to have earned 80 credits toward their degree in order to meet their internship eligibility requirements. With the exception of those enrolled in the Roger A. Saunders School, students are typically required to complete 150 hours of work at their placement site.
The academic portion of the internship experience is overseen by a faculty member (typically the student’s Program Director) who will work to guide the student through their related academic assignments.
The “hands-on” site experience is managed by professionals in the student’s field of study. Each student will have a designated site supervisor to whom they will report. An internship is typically unpaid, though select employers may choose to compensate their intern(s) in some manner.
